20150416 Alan Cocks celebrates 50 years with Coffey 370x298Coffey Technology Manager Testing Alan Cocks celebrated a rare milestone this month, achieving 50 years of service with the company.

Alan joined Coffey in 1965 at Coffey’s first Sydney office in Dickson Avenue. Since then he’s brought innovative testing solutions to countless transport infrastructure, property and mining projects across Australia.

“The most memorable time I’ve had at Coffey was the eighteen months I spent at the Olympic Stadium, and other surrounding structures at Homebush Bay,” Alan said.

“There’s a sense of satisfaction when travelling around, to see projects I’ve worked on – or even Coffey projects I haven’t personally worked on.”

Alan was site laboratory manager during construction of the Tom Price to Paraburdoo Railway in Western Australia and supervised the construction of a tailings dam at Renison-Bell in Tasmania. He also conducted pile inspections during original works on the M2 and Cockle Bay wharf developments in Sydney.

Alan’s seen considerable change at Coffey, starting only six years after the company’s launch as a member of a 25 person team. Coffey now employs more than 3500 people.

Originally interviewed by our founder David Coffey as part of our early Sydney based geotechnical business – Alan has experienced Coffey’s growth into an international professional services company.

We now operate in over 80 countries, specialising in geoservices, international development and project management.
Earlier in Alan’s career calculations consumed a large amount of time and were produced by slide-rule and log tables – now infinitely quicker with computers. He also recalls the first project where hard hats on site became mandatory and when some people wore sandals on construction sites.

“Working for Coffey has been enjoyable,” he said.

“There have been plenty of great times and the team have been like a family.”

Group Executive Testing Rhett Duncan presented Alan with his 50 year service award at a lunch held in Chatswood.

“Alan, with his experience and wealth of knowledge, has contributed enormously to Coffey through his drive to innovate and search for improved methods,” Rhett said.

“It’s a privilege to have Alan as part of our team and this milestone highlights his dedication to Coffey and our Testing business.”

Congratulations Alan, and thank you for your continued contribution to Coffey.
