    Ronald J. Chu

He has more than 20 years of experience with Tetra Tech, and has served in various technical and management capacities, including project and program manager, office manager, regional manager and Chief Operating Officer of the predecessor to RME.

    Mr Chu was named a Vice President in 2001, and has served as president of several subsidiary companies during his tenure with Tetra Tech.  He began his career as a civil/sanitary engineer in 1981 and entered the environmental consulting field in 1984.  His career has included management of major assessment, engineering and remediation programs for major oil and gas companies, Fortune 100 manufacturers, energy suppliers, and government agencies. 

    Mr Chu is a registered professional engineer in several states and has authored numerous technical articles.  He holds a B.S. in Civil Engineering from Northeastern University and an M.S. in Environmental Engineering from the University of Southern California.

    As Finance Director, I have overall responsibility for Coffey’s global finance and commercial functions. I support our operations in more than 80 countries, drawing on my international experience, including senior general management roles in Europe, the US and Asia. 

    My diverse background in the resources, manufacturing, FMCG and professional services industries gives me the chance to make an important contribution to Coffey’s strategic direction. Recognising my contribution to our leadership team, and my capabilities leading both ASX100 and small companies, I was appointed to Coffey’s Board of Directors in 2012.

    I have considerable experience on leading loss-making businesses back to profit through major change programs, drawing on my expertise in capital management. Following the GFC, I applied these disciplines to our business, leading Coffey’s organisational redesign and restructure. In the process, I took more than $25 million of overhead costs out of the business.

    As Group Executive Transport Infrastructure, I’m responsible for overseeing Coffey’s people working across Australia and New Zealand to deliver vital transport infrastructure projects. 

    An engineer by trade, I’ve had more than 20 years of senior management experience in the construction materials industry, including five years in my previous role as General Manager SEQ Concrete at Holcim. In this role, I led the integration of a zeroHarm culture through a focus on behaviour, accountability, hazard identification and close out. As a result, the SEQ Concrete Business achieved two years without any Lost Time Injuries. I learned the power of collaboration, communication and culture – all major strengths here at Coffey.

    I’m proud to be running a business that makes such an important contribution to major development projects. Often our clients’ projects are being developed in places where ground conditions are unknown or undocumented. We provide them with deep insights into the ground conditions, and properties of the materials they’re dealing with, ensuring the integrity, safety and optimal engineering design and construction.

    Having trained as an ecologist and environmental manager, I’ve been working in the global environmental / engineering consultancy sector for more than 25 years. During that time, I’ve led environmental impact assessments on many major minerals extraction, oil and gas and infrastructure projects in in Australia, UK, Hong Kong, Russia, Kazahkstan, Sri Lanka, Anguilla, China, Oman and the UAE. I’ve also managed World Bank funded projects and acted as an advisor to major banks on the Equator Principals and due-diligence audits.

    I’m proud to be running a business that fundamentally supports the success of our clients’ projects. Issues arising from the environment and the regulatory landscape can account for a large proportion of our clients’ above and below ground risk. Through effective environmental and social performance management, we help our clients to manage these challenges, saving money and project time – and minimising environmental risks.

I obtained my Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Witwatersrand, South Africa. Over a career spanning 25 years in operations and finance, I’ve worked with a broad spectrum of global listed and private companies.

    Over my career I’ve been a consultant, mentor, advisor, and director to companies, assisting with risk management, growth and operational planning. My specialities include: general management, business structures, risk management, and commercial/ financial strategy. I’m also a Chartered Accountant and CIMA Qualified.

More recently, I’ve had the privilege of continuing to work in this field at Coffey and was able to share the results of our efforts through my position on the Board, which I held from 2000-2009. I’m now wholly focused on leading our International Development team to continue to deliver value for our clients and do more good in the world.
