Coffey delivered a key education facility that incorporated world leading teaching technology and successfully managed multiple stakeholder interests to deliver the project ahead of schedule and under budget.
The University of New South Wales received project funding from the Education Investment Fund (EIF) to establish a Multi-partner Medical & Allied Health Facility at Port Macquarie – the Port Macquarie Shared Health Research and Education Campus. The higher education partners for this project include University of New South Wales, University of Newcastle and North Coast TAFE.
The building consists of about 3200m2 floor space and includes simulation labs, an anatomy lab, a PC2 wet lab and clinical skills labs. It also has two lecture theatres (one tiered) and general teaching space including a variety of tutorial rooms, computer labs and a large study area for student research. The teaching space was designed to provide facilities that would complement and leverage the nearby UNSW facilities and the TAFE’s existing Port Macquarie campus. Outside there is a large covered WIFI enabled courtyard and car parking for 85 cars.
Development of the site required the removal of several trees. Compensation was provided in the form of a protected 10m wide bushland corridor along the eastern boundary – this was landscaped to enhance and complement the koala and squirrel glider habitat.
Coffey's Port Macquarie office was engaged to manage this project, providing local project management oversight for a project delivered remotely from UNSW’s Sydney campus.
Extensive stakeholder consultation and testing of the progressive facility design outcome was undertaken at the project outset with clear deliverables established.
We worked closely with the design team and local authorities to achieve a smooth approval process. A thorough Expression of Interest process was undertaken and tendered to preferred tenderers resulting in a favourable contract sum compared to budget.
Multiple stakeholder input was effectively managed and change management processes implemented to limit project variations and delays.
A cooperative construction framework resulted in the project being delivered on time, and under budget. This provided our client the opportunity to deliver additional infrastructure including the fit out of future space, car parking control and solar power.
