Our America's operation MSI has worked in partnership with PFI and is now refining a process for equipping PFI and other local intermediary support organisations to assist indigenous health agencies and local foundations to improve their capacity to take innovative pilot projects to scale at state and national levels.
With support from the MacArthur and the Packard Foundations, MSI responded to increased interest across the international development community in improving scaling up field-tested models that address persistent problems in developing countries.
MSI spent the last seven years developing, applying and disseminating methods and tools for scaling up. These efforts currently are concentrated in rural and maternal health programs. To date, MSI has:
- Scaled-up 20 NGO pilot programs in Mexico, Nigeria and India to expand their interventions to state or national levels
- Published Scaling Up – From Vision to Large-scale Change – A Management Framework for Practitioners in 2006
- Developed a companion Scaling Up Toolkit with specific techniques and case studies based on recent field applications of the Framework
- Presented lessons learned on scaling up at more than 100 conferences and workshops sponsored by the Gates Foundation, the Brookings Institution and the Planning Commission of India, among others
