Halon Destruction

PLASCON™ - The Plasma Conversion Process

The PLASCON™ torch creates a high temperature (10,000°C) plasma arc from the discharge of a large electric current between a separate cathode and anode in the presence of argon.

Halon is directly injected into the plasma arc as a vapour under pressure. Molecules mix with the hot plasma and are almost instantaneously converted into their constituent atoms and ions by a heat degradation process known as pyrolysis.

The ionised gas begins to cool as it passes through the reaction chamber or flight tube below the torch and is then rapidly quenched to below 100°C.

A dilute aqueous mixture containing harmless salts is created and discharged as effluent to the sewer for subsequent wastewater treatment.

The Montreal Protocol requires that destruction of ozone depleting substances is 99.99% efficient. PLASCON™ is capable of destroying halons with greater than 99.999% efficiency.

PLASCON™ is also used to destroy refrigerants including CFCs, HCFCs and HFCS, other ozone depleting substances and Synthetic Greenhouse Gasses. PLASCON™ is owned and operated by BCD Technologies.
