Risk Assessment

Where the existence of toxic substances creates the potential for adverse impact on human health or the environment, the risk assessment and fate and transport studies services group can perform comprehensive assessments. This provides a scientifically credible basis for ranking remediation activities and establishing and negotiating realistic clean-up goals.

Coffey Environments knowledge and experience in human health and environmental risk assessments coupled with expertise in fate and transport analyses and helps customers to undertake remediation programs that successfully address environmental concerns within the context of business realities.

Site Assessment

Assessment scopes can be tailored to suit varying requirements and may range from simple desktop studies, through to complex assessments using a variety of investigation tools.

Sampling densities can be based on Australian standards, or lesser densities, depending on the level of detail required by the customer. Assessment methodologies generally follow the principles of the National Environment Protection Measure, but can be modified for specific needs.

Assessment methods include:

  • background/history review, including aerial photos, geological/topographic maps, site records, council records, databases (e.g. groundwater databases)
  • site walkover & geophysical investigations
  • soil drilling/excavation, logging & sampling and vapour surveys
  • groundwater well installation/sampling & aquifer testing
  • fate & transport modelling
  • risk assessment
  • processing & interpretation of data, with graphical/tabular representation of results.

Capabilities:

  • internal due diligence for liability estimation and risk management
  • site divestment and purchase; and redevelopment of contaminated sites
  • remediation design.
