The electromagnetic (EM) test responds to variations in the electrical conductivity of earth materials. Electrical conductivity is controlled by the soil and rock properties percentage saturation and type of pore fluids. Clays and clay minerals and saline groundwaters are typically highly conductive.

There are many different EM systems in common use that are capable of investigating the earth to different levels of detail from depths of less than 2m to greater than 300m. It is essential that the appropriate EM techniques be selected for each particular problem.

Coffey Geotechnics provides experienced field personnel to carry out appropriate EM earth tests matched to each particular problem. The field testing is supported by a range of processing and interpretative software.

Applications:

  • mapping and monitoring of contamination
  • soil salinity mapping
  • groundwater studies
  • rapid bedrock mapping
  • salt water intrusion
  • landfill studies
  • buried metallic objects
  • clays and gravels
  • location of faults, shears, cavities
  • leachate plume mapping
  • corrosion studies.
