Multi-Channel Analysis of Surface Waves
Coffey Geotechnics has developed a Multi-Channel Analysis Of Surface Waves (MASW) field and analysis capability at world’s best practice.
MASW data are gathered like conventional seismic refraction data, except for a close geophone spacing between 0.5 and 2 m for depths of investigation less than 50 m.
MASW uses impact seismic sources and does not require the use of explosive sources.
As MASW uses conventional seismographs to acquire seismic data, it may be used in areas of high vibrational noise and can be combined with seismic refraction and other seismic techniques.
It overcomes some of the inherent limitations of the seismic refraction method such as velocity reversal and offers a greater rate of coverage. And it can be used at discrete test locations or continuously along a profile.
Applications:
- dynamic shear modulus
- earthquake response
- liquefaction potential
- compaction studies
- material classification.
