(8 November 2011) Coffey Information will commence work with Abigroup on the Hunter Expressway after being awarded a concrete testing contract for the western section. The contract is estimated to be worth more than A$2.3 million.

Coffey Information’s Business Development Manager Matt Morley said the win was due to Coffey’s strong track record of delivering testing services efficiently on major construction projects with Abigroup.

“This win can be attributed to our proven track record and ability to deliver services onsite in an efficient and timely manner for Abigroup.

“We reduced our testing times by 35 per cent by trialling a more efficient laboratory design on the Woomargama project with Abigroup, and are now leading the industry in efficiency. We look forward to working collaboratively with Abigroup again to provide fast, accurate and quality results.

“Our new testing designs and systems enable major highways to be constructed confidently to precise design specifications and within tight time frames,” he added.

The new contract will require an onsite laboratory to be operational by February 2012. This will employ more than 17 workers full time to support the project and Coffey will also use a large permanent testing facility in Warabrook, which can support any overflow work from the project.

Last year Abigroup was awarded the D&C for the western section of the Hunter Expressway by the Roads and Traffic Authority of NSW and started work in April 2011. Abigroup’s section of the project involves building 27 kilometres of four lane divided highway between Kurri Kurri and Branxton, 22 bridges and four grade separated interchanges. Abigroup has to move almost three million cubic metres in earthworks and has already relocated over one million cubic metres.

The project is scheduled for completion by the end of 2013 and will form part of the new A$1.7 billion 40km Hunter Expressway linking the F3 Freeway near Seahampton to the New England Highway, west of Branxton. Coffey Information is also working on the eastern section of the Hunter Expressway upgrade for Thiess.
